It can be frustrating initially, but once you master the system, it becomes like uncovering some other dimension of the game.
What Frost and Flame Do
It is a good idea to understand why they are important before you take all the trouble of unlocking them. Frost Mantle provides you with good defence by freezing the enemies and pushing them. It is so handy when you are ganged or in situations that involve violent groups.
Flame Strike, however, is all about damage. It incinerates the enemies in close range and is effectively used with melee attacks. Both of these aspects entirely transform the experience of combat. You no longer react, but influence the course of every battle.

When you arrive there, get up to the top of it, and blow out the bell. This leads you to an underground route where you will meet with one of the bosses, Priscus the Ancient. Once you have beaten it, you shall at last enter the Abyss, and it is then that the true adventure starts.

You will pass through a sequence of puzzle rooms inside the Abyss. These are Ether Rest, Frostbitten Paradise and the Way of Trials. The different mechanics, such as movement, timing and interaction with the environment, are tested in each section.
Things become intense in the Path of Trials. You will have to cope with cold temperatures, platforming, a battery and a lava-puzzle. It is not too complex, yet it takes time.
After you do this, Frost Mantle is automatically unlocked. There are no skill points, no menu tricks; it is simply a matter of working through the chain of puzzles.
The Unlocking of Flame Strike is like an extension
The good thing is that you do not have to restart with Flame. After unlocking Frost, you are halfway there. Simply continue forward through the following areas.
At one point or another, you will be able to solve the last puzzle, which is the Tree of Slumber. It is at this point that the majority of players get lost since the solution is not so clear. You will have to raise the height of the pillars with your sword until they are all blue. When all this is in place, the puzzle is complete, and Flame Strike is uncovered. It is one of those times when the game has finally paid off.

The unravelling of these abilities is just one part of the story. The real story is to know how to use them appropriately.
You activate elements with the Function Wheel, and each element may be used as a separate ability or can be merged with your attacks. As you infuse your weapon with an element, it introduces a whole new dimension of destruction and impact.
As an illustration, Frost can be used with a spinning attack to freeze enemies in an instant, and Flame can be added to burn them to cause additional damage. When you begin to blend these, fighting becomes a lot more tactical and enjoyable.
Spirit Management is Important
Spirit is one aspect of the game that is not highlighted. All the abilities of the elements are based on it. When your Spirit runs dry when it is the wrong moment, then you will not have access to your best instruments.
This is why it is so crucial to control it. Regeneration of Spirit with the help of Focus in the fight may be the key to victory or defeat. Much ado about nothing, but it alters the way you handle fights.
A System That is Worth Learning
Initially, the elemental system in Crimson Desert is baffling and even exasperating. However, as soon as it hits its mark, it is among the most enjoyable aspects of the game.
It promotes curiosity, exploration and patience. The game does not give you power, but rewards it, which is far more rewarding.
