Tell Me Lies Season 3: The article contains major spoilers from Season 3, Episode 8 of Tell Me Lies, now available on Hulu.

After three seasons of manipulation, betrayal, toxic love, and emotional distress, Tell Me Lies is now officially over. And, as expected, the series finale contains a wedding, a social crisis, secrets, and a surprising conclusion that will surely leave everyone stunned.

Creator Megan Oppenheimer said that this was always the ending, and one that was always in mind from the very beginning. While fans might be satisfied or dissatisfied, one thing is for sure: this series finale is faithful to its roots. Here’s a breakdown.

Tell Me Lies Season 3: A marriage that never finds peace

The story is about Bree (Misaru Cat) and Evan (Branden Cook), who are finally getting married. The situation appears to be a new beginning with champagne toasts and an elegant evening gown.

However, there is an old secret that has been simmering just under the surface of their lives. Bree soon discovers that Evan slept with Lucy years ago. Her confrontation with him in college was more than just a bitter memory.

They slept together, and she had moved on with her life. Stephen attempts to sabotage their wedding by revealing his infidelity, but a bomb explodes instead. Bree is not shocked since she has been carrying this secret with her all this time. However, this night does not look like it will bring any peace.

Something no one saw coming

The surprise? Bree and Wrigley. At the engagement party, Wrigley, played by Spencer House, reveals the truth about their college fling, something that Bree never quite admitted to either. Emotions resurface. They connect. And they just keep going. It’s not reckless; it’s beautiful. But then Stephen interrupts with a shouty, over-the-top speech at the reception, and everything comes to a halt.

And yes, Britney Spears’ “Toxic” plays in the background. The wedding cake explodes out of the room like it’s on fire. A curse is uttered. Evan crashes to the ground, face-first. It’s dramatic and messy and has that Tell Me Lies feel to it.

Who leaked Lucy’s confession to the public?

A big question of this season is who leaked Lucy’s confession to the public. In 2009, everywhere on campus, people had copies of Lucy confessing that she had been lying about the attack. Lucy thinks that Stephen did this to her. However, in the finale, it is revealed that the one who leaked the confession was Bree.

Bree found out that Lucy had been sleeping with Evan and was furious about this. She kicked him out and destroyed the SD card containing the evidence of Lucy’s lie. However, this was not enough because the damage had already been done. Lucy gets expelled. His reputation is ruined. Stephen continues to take over the situation.

Stephen: Do you always win or not?

Stephen (Jackson White) remains the most frightening character in the show. His Yale days did not go well, and someone reported him for harassment and explicit behaviour. Wrigley might have been the one who informed on him.

Now, Stephen is facing the consequences of his actions. Stephen wins every time, and throughout this marriage, he wins by any kind of humiliation he can manage. After his engagement to Lydia fails, he screws his way into Lucy’s life and convinces her to go with him. Bree pleads with Lucy not to go. She says, “He doesn’t care about you; he cares about winning.” Lucy realises this is true. But she gets into the car anyway.

The Final Scene: Lucy’s Last Lesson

As the credits roll, Stephen and Lucy are driving away together. Their relationship is somehow cinematic and slightly hopeful. They stop and get gas.

Lucy goes into the store, and when Stephen comes back out, Stephen is gone. There is no fight. No confrontation.

Only Lucy’s purse remains on the floor. Lucy is alone on a deserted highway and laughs at herself. She realises she can’t get away from him. She’s obsessed. She’s obsessed with him and can’t get enough. She’s obsessed with this illusion.

This is not a breakup scene. It’s not a breakup scene because this is not a breakup. It’s a revelation, and this revelation is more painful.
