In the course of the “Hot Topics” segment of this week’s episode, The View hosts were quick to disagree with guest host Savannah Chrisley’s assertion that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would be the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee.
This took place during the show’s episode 18 on Wednesday, February 2. The episode centered on a discussion about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s comments on a possible U.S. involvement in the tensions between China and Taiwan.
The Taiwan issue is at the heart of the entire discussion
At the Munich Security Conference, AOC Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was asked what the United States could do if tensions between Taiwan and China escalated. Her answer was measured and direct: the aim is to never have to get to that point. That is, influence economic research and international policy in such a way that such a conflict becomes unnecessary.
All of this is happening while military bravado in the area is escalating. On December 29, China conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, involving troops, warships, fighter jets, and artillery to practice blockades and precision strikes on both land and sea targets.
China considers Taiwan a province that will eventually be reunified with the mainland, while Taiwan is a self-ruled democracy that denies the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China. This is one of the most complex and dangerous issues in the world of contemporary geopolitics.
President Trump’s biting evaluation only added fuel to the fire
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments drew the attention of several leaders of the GOP, including Trump, who told reporters on Air Force One that he “didn’t know how to react.”
The comments were brought up during a live panel discussion on The View about a related issue.
Savannah Chrisley’s Criticism and Quick Retort
During her comments, Chrisley stated that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had not yet recovered from her first mistake. “Mispronouncing a word is one thing,” she said, “but not knowing your position on Taiwan is another. That’s how you recover from what really matters. AOC hasn’t bounced back yet.”
Host Whoopi Goldberg responds that she is easier on politicians caught up in confusing foreign policy speak than on a president who lies.
Chrisley continued:
“But AOC is also the Democratic Party’s choice for the next election.”
The panel immediately pushed back. “No, no, no!” Goldberg shouted.
“You can take that up with Gavin Newsom,” Joy Behar quickly chimed in, referencing California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been rumoured to be a possible Democratic presidential candidate.
AOC has ruled out a 2028 presidential run
Ocasio-Cortez has already stated that she will not be running for president in 2028. In an interview with the New York Times, she stated that she is not affiliated with any presidential campaign. “I’m not here to run for president.
I’m not here to run or not,” she said, making it clear that she wants to address the systemic inequality that leads to the rise of far-right populist groups. At the moment, there is no indication from Ocasio-Cortez or the Democratic Party that she is running for president.
Guest status
Savannah Chrisley, known for her appearance on the reality show “Chrisley Knows Best,” will replace co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin, who is on maternity leave. Griffin gave birth to her first child with husband Justin Griffin in February. It was previously announced that several guest hosts would fill in for Griffin while she is on maternity leave.
Broader political environment
As the 2024 election cycle continues to guide the country’s politics, speculation about which candidates will run in 2028 remains speculative.
It has been observed that presidential candidates can change significantly depending on the performance of the current government and the emergence of new issues at the national level. Ocasio-Cortez is one of the most high-profile progressives in Congress, but there is no truth to her claims that she is the 2028 Democratic nominee.
