Crimson Desert: One of the most important things that may come to mind if you’re considering purchasing Crimson Desert is whether you can play with friends or not. It is a natural enquiry one could make. After all, the game is developed by Pearl Abyss, the studio behind the hugely successful Black Desert Online, and many early trailers suggested that it was a shared multiplayer world.

But it’s not so. Crimson Desert is a full single-player story; online multiplayer, co-op and PvP will be absent at launch. Although the developer has been implying that multiplayer might come in its near future, this experience is aimed at the single player adventure.

Is Crimson Desert an Online Game?

The answer is simple: No. At launch, Crimson Desert will be a 100% single-player RPG. The story is told from the perspective of the mercenary Kliff, who is controlled by the player and who is not encountered by other real players when exploring the continent of Pywel.

There are:

  • No server(s) are available for online multiplayer games.
  • No co-op campaign.
  • No PvP battles.
  • No common open world.
  • No online matchmaking.

Instead, the game is entirely about offering a cinematic single-player journey, where AI-controlled characters join the player on their journey.

Why Many Players Thought It Was Multiplayer

Crimson Desert

This is all the confusion surrounding Crimson Desert! It’s because of Pearl Abyss. Being the creators of an online game, Black Desert Online, it’s no surprise that many players expected their next big title to be online as well.

The other reason is related to the initial development of the game. Originally, when Crimson Desert was announced several years ago, it was presented as a project related to Black Desert Online, and it was even stated that there would be some discussion of multiplayer concepts. As the game progressed, it was recast as a fully single-player action RPG.

Lastly, game trailers may feature Kliff playing with several allies. The fights appear to be cooperative multiplayer, though all the companions are fully AI-controlled.

Meet Kliff’s AI Companions

There’s no online co-op, but players are not likely to find themselves all by themselves on their journey.

During the narrative, Kliff meets some of the members of the Greymanes mercenary outfit, each having different combat skills.

The companion team includes:

  • A frontline fighter who is able to absorb enemy attacks.
  • Damiane is a quick-swift fighting man adept at agile melee combat.
  • Naira is a ranged-support character that offers cover attacks.

These companions actively engage in combat, respond intelligently to enemy actions, and make significant contributions in large-scale battles.

The companion system is similar to party-based RPGs such as Dragon’s Dogma or Final Fantasy XV, in which AI companions provide a more dynamic experience when doing solo adventures.

Can You Play With Friends?

Unfortunately, the answer is still no. There’s nothing at launch to invite your friends into your world with Crimson Desert.

Players cannot:

  • Enter into other players’ campaigns.
  • Control companion characters.
  • Share quests.
  • Explore Pywel together.
  • Participate in online events.

If you buy the game with the idea of playing it co-op, then you know it isn’t.

Will Multiplayer be Postponed?

Multiplayer isn’t available as of yet, but Pearl Abyss hasn’t completely written it off. The company representatives before the launch said they were considering an online mode separately.

In financial updates, the developers even had something akin to GTA Online in mind when discussing their long-term plans, as that would likely be a separate experience from the main singleplayer story.

Note, however, that there is no official release date or roadmap or confirmed list of features at this time.

The community discussed the following potential ideas:

  • Online open-world exploration.
  • Cooperative gameplay.
  • Faction-based PvP.
  • Play base with friends.
  • Additional downloadable content.

These are not definitive features, but possibilities at the present time.

Offline Play Is Fully Supported

Crimson Desert does not need to have the internet on permanently, unlike a lot of the games that are out there nowadays.

Players are able to play without having to keep connected to online servers after the initial install is done and the required updates are installed. This offers more flexibility in playing while eliminating most of the connectivity issues prevalent in online games.

Save files, however, are only applicable to the platform they are from. The game is currently not cross-platform, so progress can’t be made on console and transferred to PC, or PC and transferred to console.

Pearl Abyss Continues Improving the Game

Pearl Abyss has gone through several updates since launching to address community feedback.

New patches have been added to enhance the following:

  • Additional fast travel locations.
  • Better inventory storage.
  • Easier skill progression.
  • Gameplay balancing.
  • Improved interface elements.
  • Stability and performance improvements.

The updates reflect the developer’s desire to keep supporting the game for the long term, even if multiplayer is implemented in the future.

Is Crimson Desert Worth Buying Today?

Crimson Desert

It will depend on your experience. Those looking for multiplayer may find themselves disappointed, as it’s not on offer for launch.

But for those who like an open-ended, story-driven RPG with rich environments, satisfying combat, cinematic story and AI companions that are not to be taken lightly, single-player fun is abundant here.

With its impressive world design, interactive combat, and ongoing updates, the game has carved out a niche for itself as one of the best action RPGs of 2026. Multiplayer, if ever, will probably build on a solid base instead of the lack of that base.
